Mountain living

Truckee is a special mountain community and we are blessed to call it "home".  Whether you have decided to live here full-time or to spend your weekends and holidays here, we know you will grow to love our small mountain town as much as we do.  With mountain living, comes some challenges especially during the winter months.  Below are a few tips to help you transition.

Mountain essentials

While we will clear your driveway when we receive 3-4" or more of snow, you will need to clear snow in smaller storms as well as clearing your decks, walkways, snow that we cannot clear in front of your garage and at times your snow berms. Shoveling is a fact of life in the mountains. These supplies will make life easier:
  • Scoop shovel - preferably plastic
  • Pusher shovel for smaller storms
  • Metal shovel for ice build up
  • Ice melt and/or sand for traction

mountain driving

A 4wd vehicle with good snow tires will make life easier and less stressful.  If you do not have a 4wd, be sure to always carry chains. Keep these supplies in your vehicle at all times:
  • Chains
  • Shovel
  • Snacks/Water
  • Warm blankets
  • Snow brush- it is illegal to drive with snow on your roof
Always check road conditions before leaving your home and be willing to modify your plans.

mountain attitude

There will most certainly be storms that disrupt your plans.  Road closures, power outages, spotty internet service and empty grocery store shelves are inevitable in our mountain community. Practice patience and hang tight while the street plows, snow removal companies, utility workers and other essential employees work hard to get things up and running again.

Snow days can be a lot of fun with the right attitude!
